CLASS 12- THE DEEP WATER 

EXPLAIN WITH REFERENCE TO THE CONTEXT

1- From the beginning ………….. force of the waves.

Reference-: This paragraph is taken from the chapter 'Deep Water' by William Douglas.

Context- This paragraph gives information about an incident in the childhood of William Douglas.

Explanation: The protagonist of the chapter, William Douglas, tells that his father was on a California beach when he was about three or four years old. They were in the wave and the narrator was hanging on his father's lap. Suddenly, the waves knocked him down and swept over him. The water choked him inside and he had lost his breath. Though the incident was not serious but he was scared. The father knew that nothing would go wrong so he was laughing but from that day a terror about the strong power of water sat in the heart of the narrator.

2.- It seemed….but not my mouth.

Reference - This quote is taken from the chapter 'Deep Water' by 'William Douglas'.

Context - The paragraph describes the fatal incident at the pool in which Douglas showed his efforts to survive

Explanation- When Douglas was thrown into the pool, he felt the depth of nine feet as ninety feet. He didn't know how to swim till that time. He reached the bottom immediately and could not hold his breath. But bravely. He gathered his strength and, hitting from the bottom, what he thought would flow upwards, he imagined that it would bounce on the surface like a cork (fish). But he came slowly and saw nothing but water. yellow water. He was tense and tried to grab any rope but there was water everywhere. He was choking. When she tried to cry, there was no sound coming out of her throat. Then his eyes and nose came out of the water but his whole face could not come out.

3.And then she …… was still alive.

Context - This quote reflects the intensity and actual experience of Douglas's fear of drowning in the pool.

Explanation - When Douglas was drowning in the pool. A terror that was true, complete and dangerous, it took hold of him, it was a terror that was completely unknown, out of control. Only one who experiences it can understand it. Douglas was slowly going under the water. His limbs were paralyzed because of fear, hard and hard, with no movement. He could not even speak the voice frozen in his throat. The pounding in his head and the palpitations of his heart were the proof of his vitality.

Context - The narrator explains his position after being saved from drowning.

Explanation: After several hours from drowning, Douglas went to his house but he felt all kinds of weakness and his legs were trembling. Indeed, that fatal experience coupled with fear and unexpected and prolonged efforts made him weak both physically and mentally. He was in severe pain even when he was lying on the bed. He could not eat that day, the fear was so strong that his terror could not go beyond his heart for long. Even he was unable to move much and the slightest movement hurt him. His knees were trembling and he was in pain. Overall, he remained ill for a long time.

5. The experience had…………………grew in intensity.

Reference - This is a quote from the text 'Deep Water' by 'William Douglas'.

Context - He tells the readers that . We only have to fear. He narrates about his real life experience.

Explanation- In this paragraph Douglas talks about his experience and the meaning of a lifetime for it as only a person facing such a situation can understand. But at the same time, when there is peace in death. What scares the fear of death? According to the words of Roosevelt, all we have to fear is fear. Douglas had experienced both the sensations of dying as well as the fear of death, but it was the desire to live in his heart that made him courageous and striving. Because of that will, the intensity of living increased and he not only saved but conquered his fear of water
