Central idea of the
poem – A Photograph
The poem A Photograph by Shirley Toulson is a poem reminiscent of the poetess's past with her mother. Seeing a cardboard made with an old picture of the poetess's mother and her two cousins, the poetess travels back to past memories of old times. At the beach, they were all enjoying a sea vacation and snapped the picture from uncle's camera with folded hands. Mother was only twelve years old, laughing and smiling. Nothing changed with the ocean today Mother was overjoyed with her cousin Betty Dolly. For the poetess and the mother, it was a past event and after the great loss of defeat, both tried to overcome it at their level. The poetess is telling that her mother was living equal to the years of her life and now she is speechless. He has nothing to say. There the poetess is surrounded by silence and she or she is completely imprisoned in it.
